Klitschko KO's Solis In 1st Round, Retains WBC Heavyweight Title

Vitali Klitschko (42-2, 39 KO's) retained his WBC heavyweight title, kayoing Odlanier Solis (17-1, 12 KO's) in the first round. Official time of the knockout was 3:00.

Klitschko, 39, controlled the fight with his enormous size advantage, utilizing his long left jab to keep Solis off-balance. At 1:50, Solis landed a quick, sneaky overhand right to Klitschko's sturdy jaw. Shortly thereafter, Klitschko hit Solis with a grazing right-hand shot that sent him on his back. Solis, 30, appeared to injure one or both of his legs when he fell to the canvas. As a result, Solis was unable to beat referee Jose Guadalupe Garcia's ten count.

Solis, a 2004 Olympic gold medalist with a stellar amateur record of 347-12, was supposed to provide a stiff test to Klitschko's heavyweight title reign.
