Atlantic City, NJ—Welterweights Ronald Cruz and Manuel Guzman, who live and train within forty miles of each other in Pennsylvania, will take their in-state rivalry to New Jersey when they meet in an eight-round contest Saturday evening, April 23, in the Palladium Ballroom at Caesars Atlantic City.
The Cruz-Guzman fight will serve as the semifinal to the scheduled 12-round main event which features Omar Sheika, of Paterson, NJ, against Garrett Wilson, of Philadelphia, PA, for the vacant United States Boxing Association (USBA) cruiserweight title. The first of seven fights begins at 7.30 p.m. in the 1,450-seat ballroom, the first time it has been used for boxing.
Cruz, 24, of Bethlehem, PA, is coming off a pair of strong performances. He knocked out Jeremy Bryan, of Paterson, NJ, last Oct. 30 at Bally’s Atlantic City, then followed with a third-round K0 over Dillet Frederick, of Fort Myers, FL, on Feb. 26 in the same ring.
A pro less than 28 months, Cruz is 11-0, 8 K0s.
Guzman, 28, of Lancaster, PA, comes into this fight having lost an eight-round decision to former U.S. Olympian Sadam Ali last Dec. 9 at the Prudential Center in Newark, NJ. Ali is unbeaten in 11 pro fights himself.
Prior to that, Guzman got off the floor in the first round and knocked out Ardrick Butler, of Philadelphia, PA, in two rounds July 9, 2010, at Atlantic City Boardwalk Hall.
A pro since 2006, Guzman is 7-10-2, 3 K0s. He has never been stopped and was the first boxer to beat then-undefeated Tommy Rainone, of New York, in 2008.
Five additional fights complete the card.

R.I.P. Gil Clancy
From Ring 8 - http://www.ring8ny.com/
It saddened us to learn that Hall of Fame boxing trainer and commentator, Gil Clancy, passed away this morning. Gil worked with Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier, George Foreman, Jerry Quarry as well as Gerry Cooney in his bout with Foreman. He was the first and only trainer of Emile Griffith, and led him to win both the welterweight and middleweight championships of the world. He was a class act and an asset to the great sport of boxing. He will surely be missed. May he rest in peace.
Gil Clancy was born on May 30, 1922. Clancy is a Hall of Fame boxing trainer and one of the most noted boxing commentators of the 1980s and 1990s. Clancy is a member of the International Boxing Hall of Fame. In 1983, he won the Sam Taub Award for excellence in boxing broadcasting journalism.
He is married to Nancy Clancy, and has six children and a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
After the famous No Más Fight between Roberto Durán and Sugar Ray Leonard was stopped in the 8th round when Duran quit with a “No más! No más!”, it was Gil Clancy who first suggested that Duran must have quit due to stomach distress and probably had to use the bathroom. Ultimately, this turned out to be just about what Durán later said himself.

Grano In Crossroads Fight April 9 In Hartford
“The Willie Pep Boxing Classic" at Connecticut Convention Center
HARTFORD (March 31, 2011) – Popular Connecticut heavyweight Tony “TNT” Grano will be in a crossroads fight April 9 when he headlines “The Willie Pep Boxing Classic,” presented by Hard Hittin’ Promotions (“HHP”), at the Connecticut Convention Center in Hartford.
Grano (17-2-1, 13 KOs), fighting out of nearby Hebron, faces veteran “Diamond” Dominque Alexander in the 8-round main event. Grano, the WBF All-Americas heavyweight champion and 2005 U.S. Nationals winner, is coming off his second career loss, the first by stoppage, last June to Nicolai Firtha in June. Grano hopes to get back where he was in 2009, when he knocked out previously unbeaten Travis Kauffman (18-0) on ShoBox.
“I feel real good and have been training hard,” Grano reported. “I’ve been getting good work in the gym, hitting the roads running, and I’ve been working with good sparring partners. I feel sharp and I’m excited about getting back into the ring. I felt that I got a bad shake in my last fight where there was an early stoppage. I was in great condition, physically, but not mentally. I wasn’t focused and didn’t have a good game plan, Not being focused killed me.
“He rocked me in the first round and I was hit when down. That through me out of what game plan I had and I went toe-to-toe with a big guy – punch-for-punch – and you can’t do that in this division. I was totally shocked when the referee stopped the fight. I was throwing back and had just hit him with a three-punch combination.”
Alexander has fought WBO heavyweight champion Shannon Briggs and current WBO cruiserweight titlist Krzysztof Wlodarczyk, in addition to world heavyweight title challengers Kali Meehan and Fres Oquendo, and Odlanier Solis.
“I know Alexander is experienced with over 30 fights against guys like Briggs and Solis. I do know that every time he’s stepped up he’s been stopped. I don’t take anybody lightly but, personally, I don’t think he can last more than four rounds with me. Not the way I feel right now. I’m very confident and in great shape. This is a good guy for me to get back in the ring with.
“I’m ready to make a serious statement. I’m going to show everybody on April 9th that I’m ready to make the next step up. After this fight I want to stay busy and get back in the ring in May or June.”
The undercard showcases some of the best young fighters in New England, including Meriden (CT) by way of Mexico bantamweight Danny Aquino (5-1, 1 KO) vs. James Owens (4-2, 2 KOs), Puerto Rican junior welterweight prospect – training in New Haven – Javier “El Chino” Flores (5-0, 4 KOs) vs. game Norwalk (CT) veteran Shakha Moore (10-15-3, 2 KOs), and promising New Haven featherweight and former amateur standout, Luis Rosa (5-0, 2 KOs) vs. Tommy Attencio (4-6, 2 KOs), all in 6-round bouts. Undefeated East Hartford Joseph “Chip” Perez (5-0, 2 KOs) faces Charles Vanderveer (1-1, 1 KO) in a 4-rounder.
Also scheduled to fight on the undercard are a pair of Middletown (CT) favorites, light heavyweight Doug Cartelli (1-0) and pro-debuting junior middleweight Willie Picard. They’ll be facing the Williams brothers, respectively, Jaquan (pro debut) and Charles (0-1), from North Carolina. All fights and fighters are subject to change.
Tickets are priced at $100.00 (ringside), $80.00 (preferred seating), $60.00 (reserved) and $40.00 (general admission) and are available to purchase by calling 860.402.4838 or The Lions Den at 860.613.2394.
Willie Pep: Born Gugloermo Papaleo in 1922 in Middletown, CT. He was a 2-time world champion who retired in 1966 after a 26 year professional career with an amazing 229-11-1 (65 KOs) record. In 1990, Pep was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in Canastota, New York. He died November 23, 2006 at the age of 84.
UNDEFEATED CANADIAN MIDDLEWEIGHT DAVID LEMIUEX READY TO MAKE A STATEMENT IN WBC TITLE ELIMINATOR BOUT AGAINST MARCO ANTONIO RUBIO APRIL 8 LIVE ON ESPN'S FRIDAY NIGHT FIGHTS FROM THE BELL CENTRE IN MONTREAL
Montreal, Canada (March 31) - Undefeated Canadian middleweight David Lemieux (25-0, 24 KOs) is prepared to make a serious statement when he faces Marco Antonio Rubio (49-5-1, 42 KOs) in a WBC middleweight title eliminator on Friday, April 8 from the Bell Centre in Montreal. The Lemieux vs. Rubio fight, which is the final installment of Groupe Yvon Michel's highly acclaimed FAST AND THE FURIOUS fight series, will be the main event of ESPN's Friday Night Fights that evening (11:00 p.m. ET, ESPN2).
"Rubio is the best opponent I have fought to date," said Lemieux, whose list of conquests includes Hector Camacho Jr. whom he beat in a first round knockout. "It is going to be interesting to see what Rubio brings to the table. He is a big puncher and has a lot more experience than I do. I am ready to give it my all and I am preparing for war."
"We are excited to see David in a terrific fight that night from the Bell Centre in Montreal and we are delighted that the US boxing fans will have a chance to see him on ESPN's Friday Night Fights," said Yvon Michel, President of Groupe Yvon Michel. "He is a fantastic, very exciting fighter and I think this very competitive fight against Rubio will catapult him to another stage of his career. It is a terrific main event fight and a really great way to end our Fast and Furious Fight series too."
Lemieux, who has knocked out 24 of his 25 career opponents, is in a position that most fighters dream of - he is one step away from a world title. Rubio, who has an impressive resume and brings his veteran's experience to the ring, will be a sure test for the undefeated Lemieux. If victorious, Lemieux will be set to face the winner of WBC Middleweight Championship between Sebastian Zbik vs. Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. taking place on June 4.
"I honestly feel that Rubio is tougher than either of the fighters I would face for the title if I win," Lemieux continued. "I am not looking past Rubio and taking it one step at a time, but I am really looking forward to making a statement with this fight and doing whatever I have to do to get a shot at the middleweight title."
Long before Lemieux was ranked the #2-ranked middleweight in the world by the WBC, he was a troublemaker running in the wrong circles. A self-proclaimed "Dennis the Menace," Lemieux was kicked out of school multiple times, as his family moved from house to house, and was often found fighting in the streets. At the age of nine, a neighbor caught Lemieux smoking a cigar and offered to take him to the boxing gym in order to teach him discipline.
"Boxing saved my life," said Lemieux. "Violence and drugs were all around me when I was growing up. If I hadn't discovered boxing, I don't know what I would be doing. I never would have been good at a routine desk job. I fell in love with the boxing gym, and I never wanted to leave."

Segura-Calderon I was one of the 2010 Fights of the Year. Segura (26-1-1, 22 KOs), fighting out of Bell, California by way of Mexico, captured the WBO, The Ring and WBA Super light flyweight titles last October, when he knocked-out the previously unbeaten champion Calderon (34-1-1, 6 KOs) in the eighth round in Puerto Rico. Segura was leading (69-64, 68-65, 67-66) on all three judges’ scorecards at the time of the stoppage. Broadway Boxing Results
By: Michael Gerard Seiler
Junior lightweight Jose Pedraza (2-0, 2 KO's) made a successful U.S.A. professional debut at the BB King Blues Club and Grill, stopping Corben Page (1-2) at 2:25 of the first round.
Pedraza displayed excellent balance and coordination, as well as an abundance of future-star qualities. He overwhelmed Page with his hand speed and power, dropping the Oregon native with a quick right-hand shot in the beginning of the round. Page got up, but was met with blistering combinations from the Puerto Rican sensation. Once again, Pedraza put Page on the canvas with a short right cross. At this point, Page's face was badly bruised and he was trapped in the corner. Referee Joe Cusano finally stopped the bout after Pedraza unloaded another barrage of punches to Page's head and body.
In the co-main event, Darnell Boone (18-17-3, 7 KO's) upset previously unbeaten Willie Monroe, Jr. (10-1, 4 KO's), capturing an eight-round split decision victory. Official scores were 78-73 and 77-74 for Boone, and 76-75 for Monroe.
Monroe, a southpaw, appeared to win the first two rounds using his right jab and superior lateral movement. However, Boone came on strong in the third round, connecting with an overhand right and many shots to the body. At times, Monroe's back was against the ropes, as Boone smothered his punches.
Monroe kept Boone away in round four behind his jab and slick movement, although he had trouble in round five. Boone stalked him all over the ring, landing a left hook that floored Monroe, but it was ruled a slip by the referee. Boone aggressively attacked and scored with shots to Monroe's body.
In the sixth round, Boone applied heavy pressure, but Monroe kept him turning.
Boone did very well in the seventh round, as Monroe stood in front of him too long at times without unleashing many punches.
Finally, Boone caught Monroe in the eighth round with a firm right-hand shot, sending the Rochester, New York native to the canvas.
Light heavyweight Seanie Monaghan (7-0, 4 KO's) put together another crowd-pleasing performance, winning a four-round unanimous decision against Michael Glenn (2-3, 1 KO). All three judges scored the contest 40-36 for Monaghan.
Although the official scores were one-sided, Monaghan went blow-for-blow with Glenn throughout the entire bout. Monaghan showed tremendous endurance, and his large volume of body punching slowly wore Glenn down.
Super middleweight prospect Travis Peterkin of Brooklyn, NY (2-0, 2 KO's) stopped Abdellah Smith (1-2, 1 KO) of Queens, NY at 2:33 of round one. Peterkin, a southpaw, hurt Smith with several straight-left bombs and vicious right hooks until the bout was halted.
Scott Burrell (3-0, 2 KO's) won a four-round unanimous decision over a tough Jemell Tyson (0-1-1) in a lightweight contest. Official scores were 39-37 and 40-36 twice.
Tyson was very competitive in round one, but Burrell landed multiple right crosses, leaving Tyson slightly staggering, as he walked back to his corner at the end of the round.
In round two, Burrell controlled the action with his devastating right-hand punches, although Tyson fought better in the middle of the round, scoring with fierce left uppercuts to Burrell's body.
It was quite apparent by round three that Burrell was the sharper puncher, and his shots were inflicting a lot of damage. Yet, Tyson fought well in the fourth round. Tyson cut Burrell's right eye with a series of straight lefts, and totally outworked him in the final round, but came up short on the judges' scorecards.
Junior middleweight Delen Parsley (5-0, 2 KO's) remained unbeaten, capturing a six-round unanimous decision over a fearless David Lopez (3-5, 3 KO's). Official scores were 58-56 and 59-55 twice.
Parsley, who prefers counter-punching over pressing his opponents, was the aggressor during the first two rounds. He successfully landed his right-hand shots during the first six minutes of action.
In round three, Lopez tried to catch Parsley with a lunging left hand, but missed widely. Suddenly, Lopez stepped up the pace. Parsley responded by tagging Lopez with a sharp left jab, and landing a thunderous left hook to the body.
Lopez got to Parsley in round four, exploding with a multitude of punches. Lopez, a southpaw, connected with several straight lefts and right hooks to Parsley's body.
Parsley controlled range in round five, although Lopez came on with wide punches toward the end of the round.
Once again, Lopez charged forward in round six, but was hesitant at times to let his hands go due to Parsley's hand speed.
Junior welterweight Gabriel DuLuc (1-0) won his professional debut over Joal Alarcon (0-2) by a four-round unanimous decision. All three judges scored the fight 40-35.
DuLuc, a Dorchester, Massachusetts native, sent Alarcon down in the first round with a thunderous right cross. From there, he dominated the round with right crosses and left hooks in succession.
DuLuc punished Alarcon with body shots in round two, and used lateral movement to frustrate him.
In rounds three and four, Alarcon's punch output steadily dropped, letting DuLuc coast to his first career victory.

LOS ANGELES, March 30 - After scoring two spectacular knockout wins in his return to the ring following a nearly two year absence, James "Mandingo Warrior" Kirkland has picked up where he left off...dominating his opponents. On the April 9 "Action Heroes" pay-per-view event at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, the knockout artist will continue his highly anticipated comeback against former Junior Middleweight World Champion Nobuhiro Ishida.
When James Kirkland (27-0, 24 KO's) is on a fight card, boxing fans know what they're in for, and it's usually a spectacular knockout. That's what they got on March 5 of this year when the Austin, Texas native who now lives and trains in Las Vegas returned to the ring and stopped Ashandi Gibbs in just 34 seconds. Just 13 days later, Kirkland struck again, this time dispatching Jhon Berrio in less than two rounds. The 27-year-old southpaw expects to get more work against Ishida, but with the dynamite Kirkland packs in his fists, it's advisable to stay in your seat for this one.
Owner of the interim WBA Junior Middleweight World Title for over a year from 2009 to 2010, 35-year-old Nobuhiro Ishida (22-6-2, 7 KO's) is a veteran who has the ability to show a young fighter like Kirkland some things he's never seen in the ring before. The Osaka, Japan native is a proud warrior who has never been stopped in his nearly 11-year professional career and is unbeaten in 12 of his last 13 bouts. In his last fight, Ishida lost a narrow split decision in a tough battle with Rigoberto "El Español" Alvarez, Canelo Alvarez's brother, and is looking forward to getting back on track in his United States debut on April 9.
"Action Heroes," featuring Erik Morales vs. Marcos Maidana in a 12-round junior welterweight bout, Robert Guerrero vs. Michael Katsidis in a 12-round bout for the vacant WBA and WBO Interim Lightweight Championships, James Kirkland vs. Nobuhiro Ishida in an 8-round middleweight bout and Paul Malignaggi vs. Jose Miguel Cotto in a 10-round welterweight bout, is presented by Golden Boy Promotions in association with Erik Morales' Box Latino and Universum Box Promotions and sponsored by Cerveza Tecate, AT&T, DeWalt Tools and Tres Generaciones Tequila. Guerrero vs. Katsidis is presented in association with Sampson Boxing. The bouts will be produced and distributed live on HBO Pay-Per-View® beginning at 9:00 p.m. ET/6:00 p.m. PT.

STAR BOXING RETURNS TO MOHEGAN SUN APRIL 22ND ON ESPN'S "FRIDAY NIGHT FIGHTS"
"We are excited to be returning to Mohegan Sun, with what promises to be an exciting double-header," stated Joe DeGuardia, CEO of Star Boxing, and promoter of Jargal and Andrade. "At Star Boxing we always look to make the best possible fights for the fans, and we feel April 22nd will be no different. You have one of the hottest prospects in all of boxing opening up the show, and Jargal and Prescott are both all-action fighters which is sure to produce fireworks. We are also looking to to pack the undercard with exciting local talent that will make it an entertaining and exciting show from top to bottom."
"Friday Night Fights and Mohegan Sun go hand-in-hand when it comes to providing a memorable night of action and competition," said Tom Cantone, Vice President of Sports and Entertainment at Mohegan Sun. "The relationship we've sustained throughout the years has provided boxing fans with entertainment and allows the region's premiere fighters to showcase their talents."
Jargal (15-1-3, 10KO's) who represented his native Mongolia at the 2004 World Games, is coming off his lone defeat as a pro, a very close, controversial split decision to Steve Chambers (23-1-1). Prescott, (23-3, 19KO's) who is ranked #11 by the WBA, began his career knocking out seventeen of the first eighteen opponents he faced. Prescott shocked the boxing world when he completely annihilated current WBA jr. welterweight champion, Amir Khan, knocking him out in the first round when the two met in 2008. Prescott has since all but begged Khan to step back into the ring with him, and get a shot at Khan's world title, but Khan refuses to fight the man who knocked him out. A win over "Khanqueror" Prescott would immediately throw Jargal into the mix of the loaded jr. welterweight division.
For Andrade (12-0, 8KO's), who along with representing the US in the 2008 Olympics, was the 2007 Amateur World Champion, it will mark the seventh time in just thirteen fights as a pro that the young star will be featured on ESPN. The 23-year-old southpaw, has continued to impress each time he steps in the ring, and is coming off a dominating eight round unanimous decision over another once beaten prospect Alberto Herrera (7-1-1) on ESPN in his last fight.
Bell (8-1, 5KO's) bounced back nice in 2010, (after suffering his first loss as a pro in 2008,) picking up two victories, including a shut-out win in his last fight against previously undefeated Quinton Willis. Bell's has a very exciting non-stop, high output punching style which will make for a very entertaining fight against the highly regarded Andrade.
Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased by calling Ticketmaster at 1 (800) 745-3000 or visiting www.ticketmaster.com. Tickets can also be purchased by calling the Star Boxing office at (718) 823-2000 or visiting www.starboxing.com. Tickets are also available for purchase at the Mohegan Sun Box Office. Tickets are priced at $80, $50 and $35. ESPN will begin live coverage of the event starting at 8PM ET.

Bernard Hopkins On Jean Pascal: "Don't Be Surprised If He Dies In May In That Ring; Don't Be Surprised If I Kill Him!"
By: Michael Gerard Seiler, BoxingLedger.com
Bernard "The Executioner" Hopkins (51-5-2, 32 KO's), 46, will once again try to become the oldest champion in boxing history when he battles Jean Pascal (26-1-1, 16 KO's), 28, in a rematch on Saturday, May 21st, at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Canada. The bout will be for Pascal's WBC, IBO and Ring Magazine light heavyweight titles, as well as the vacant WBC Diamond light heavyweight title. Their first bout was scored a twelve-round majority draw.
A man should be very careful about ridiculing and inciting highly-motivated people, especially a legendary fighter such as Bernard Hopkins. Yesterday, Pascal crossed the line. He alleged that Hopkins is using performance enhancing drugs.
Today, Hopkins responded to those allegations at Planet Hollywood in New York City.
"Don't be surprised if he dies in May in that ring," exclaimed Hopkins. "Don't be surprised if I kill him!"
"He's a whiner," commented Pascal. "Me, I consider that I won the fight, a close fight. But, I am not a whiner. The judges decided otherwise, and scored it a draw. I accept it, because you can never call a close fight a robbery."
Pascal did not completely cease from his allegations about Hopkins this afternoon.
Pascal added, "May 21st you better be on something, because I'm going to bust your ass!"
At this point in his illustrious career, Hopkins doesn't need any extra fuel to get him going.
"I fight for a different reason," stated Hopkins. "I don't need boxing. I'm fine, very fine. Why I'm still fighting is not because I can't turn the lights off and get it out of my system. That's what I do; That's who the hell I am."
"I would never say something derogatory about an athlete without any proof to support it," said Nazim Richardson, Hopkins' trainer. "Because, you don't realize you are actually giving a man the greatest compliment in the world."

Brazil’s Prodigal Son Michael Oliveira Returns Home To Capture Interim WBC Title
SAO PAULO, Brazil (March 25, 2011) – Somebody’s “O” had to go in tonight’s Brazilian-Argentinean showdown between unbeaten prospects, as Michael “The Brazilian Rocky” Oliveira’s rising popularity in his native country continued to grow with his 10-round unanimous decision victory against a game Abel Nicolas “El Principito” Adriel, headlining the “International Boxing Challenge” pro-am event at Mauro Pinheiro Gymnasium in Sao Paulo.
The 20-year-old Oliveira (14-0, 11 KOs), rated No. 10 by the USBA, captured the Interim World Boxing Council Latino Super Middleweight Championship, defeating (98-92, 98-92, 97-93) previously undefeated Adriel (10-1-2, 2 KOs) in front of a spirited, partisan crowd.
“International Boxing Challenge,” presented by MO Productions, aired live on TV Globo Network, SporTV cable, GloboEsporte and TV Globo International.
Brazilians and Argentineans are traditional arch-rivals in sports and the 21-year-old Adriel, who fights out of Buenos Aires, was a natural foe for the hard-punching Oliveira. The extremely active Adriel is a consummate boxer who has now had 13 fights in only 14 months as a professional.
“He changed his style,” Oliveira said after the fight. “I usually fight on the inside but he fought on the inside, and I had to fight on the outside. My performance was sufficient to win and put smiles on the faces of the fans here tonight, but I’m not smiling. I know I’m 100 times better than I showed. I knew he didn’t have any power and he liked to work the body, but he didn’t go to the body as much as I had expected. When he started protecting himself downstairs, I went back upstairs at the end of the fight. It was a fight of adjustments.”
Oliveira, the repeat winner of the Brazilian International Press Award’s Athlete of the Year (2009 and 2010), was born in Sao Paulo but he moved two weeks after birth to Miami with his family. He made his Brazilian debut last November, stopping Junior Ramos in the third round, and remains committed to re-establishing boxing in Brazil.
“I think the people here in Brazil have put me on a pedestal but I’m really not there, yet,” Oliveira noted. “This fight was a valuable learning experience for me. I got sidetracked, expecting one thing from him, and I getting something else. You know, it was like at Christmas when you expect a ball but get a doll. He was tough and I’ll be better because of this fight.”
Oliveira expects to return to the ring once again in Sao Paulo in late May or early June.
Brazil’s last superstar boxer, 4-time world champion Acelino “Popo” Freitas, was in attendance supporting Oliveira.
“This was a very structured event and an incredible project,” Freitas commented. “Michael is very humble and calm in the ring. I flew two hours from my home to support him and what MO Productions is doing for boxing in Brazil.”

Guillermo Rigondeaux: A Champion In & Out Of The Ring
Cork, Ireland (March 25, 2011) – WBA Interim Super Bantamweight champion Guillermo ‘El Chacal’ Rigondeaux (8-0, 6 KOs), arguably the greatest amateur boxer of all time, retained his world title last Saturday night by beating previously undefeated hometown favorite and former European champion, Willie ‘Big Bang” Casey (11-1, 7 KOs), in impressive fashion at City West Convention Center in Dublin.
The Guillermo-Casey title fight featured a pair of undefeated boxers headlining a show promoted by Top Rank, Nowhere 2 Hyde Promotions and Dolphil Promotions. Nowhere 2 Hyde Promotions is owned and operated by Gary Hyde, who has managed Rigondeaux since he defected from Cuba in 2007.
‘Rigo’ entered the ring to roar of 4,200 fans loudly booing him, but the talented foreigner calmly pranced around the ring during the pre-fight announcements, and boldly made the executioner sign to the angry, partisan crowd.
At the sounding of the first bell, Casey headed straight at “Rigo,” expecting him to retreat, but Guillermo took a half-step back and countered with a furious combination. Casey instantly felt his opponent’s amazing power and less than one minute later the rugged Irishman was stopped in his tracks by Rigondeaux’ signature punch -- left cross to the liver.
The writing was on the wall as Casey started running scared, attempting to survive the onslaught. ‘Rigo’ is known as a great finisher and he went right after his soon-to-be eighth pro victim, catching Casey with a perfectly delivered uppercut that dropped Casey for the first time in his pro career. The extremely confident ‘Rigo’ strolled over to the neutral corner with one arm raised, signaling his impending victory. Casey rose and ran for cover with ‘Rigo’ closing in to finish the show.
Rigondeaux’ all-out attack, particularly a devastating combination, sent Willie flying across the ring, and down again. This time a dazed Casey rose on very unsteady legs and as the action was about to resume, veteran referee Stanley Christodoulou warned Willie that he would stop the fight if Casey was floored again. “Rigo” immediately jumped all over an overwhelmed and outclassed Casey, who stumbled forward and was going down but was saved further embarrassment by the referee officially who halted the action at 2:38 of the opening round. ‘Rigo” had successfully silenced the crowd with assassin-like results in his first Interim WBA title defense.
Much had been written about both fighters leading up to the March 19th showdown regarding their respective records professional and amateur, home countries, families and much more. What hadn’t been reported written about them, though, was the Cuban boxer’s many links to Ireland, as well as his humanitarian nature. Hyde, who hails from Cork, had been instrumental in bringing a number of Cuban fighters to Ireland, including Rigondeaux, to start their professional boxing careers.
“Rigondeaux defending his world title in Ireland was like a dream come true for me,” Hyde explained. “I managed Rigondeaux since 2007, when in Cuba he signed a managerial contract with me, but it wasn’t until 2009 that the great Cuban fighter managed to defect from Cuba to the United States in order to begin his professional career.”
In January of 2010, while preparing for his fifth pro fight versus Adolfo Landeros, a devastating earthquake hit the Island of Haiti. ‘Rigo’ told Hyde he wanted to donate the purse for that fight to Haitian relief efforts. Hyde contacted Dr. Mick Molloy, a medical officer with the Boxing Union of Ireland, who was at that time working in Boston at the Division of Disaster Medicine at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Centre, which is associated with the Harvard Medical School network.
Dr. Molloy engaged in a number of trips to Haiti as a member of the disaster medical team from the International Centre for Disaster Resilience (ICDR), operated by prominent members of the Disaster Medicine section at Harvard Medical School, Dr Greg Ciottone and Dr Robert Macy.
Dr. Molloy spent more than a year in Boston specializing in disaster Medicine and returned to Ireland to finish his training in emergency medicine at Beaumont Hospital.
The first time Dr. Molloy and ‘Rigo’ actually met, however, was during the Rigondeaux-Casey fight week in Dublin and Dr. Molloy thanked him profusely for his donation to the Boston Children’s Foundation (BCF) and International Centre for Disaster Resilience (ICDR), which funded a six-member team for its initial mission to Haiti in January of 2010.
In addition to being a 2-time Olympic gold medalist, the 29-year-old Rigondeaux also was a 7-time Cuban national champion who captured a pair of World Championship titles, including his 2001triumph in Belfast, during an incredible 243-4 amateur career.
“Rigo” made his pro debut May 22, 2009, capturing the NABA super bantamweight title in his third fight as a pro, and last November in only his seventh fight he won a unanimous 12-round decision against Ricardo Cordoba (37-2-2) to become the WBA Interim 122-pound division champion.
The multi-talented southpaw, now fighting out of Miami, has been trained by Ronnie Shields for his past three fights. Rigondeaux is The Ring’s # 6 rated super bantamweight.

Tomasz Adamek Media Workout
"Size, yes it is very important, but not the best. I'm not short, but when I am fighting I'm moving my head, bending my knees, moving side to side, being flexible, making it hard to touch me. With every fight I think it gets more difficult to hit me."
"I do not look past McBride or take him for granted. This is boxing, one punch can change the situation, just one punch can change everything. This is my test before Klitschko. I respect McBride. "
"My weight is natural, now I weigh maybe 215 - 216. I am training hard, 2 times a day. I feel very good, fast when I am at this weight. This is very comfortable for me."
"Roger says every camp I hit stronger because I am more loose and flexible. When I am more loose I am more dynamic. I think when I hit somebody I can hurt him."
"A lot of people say 'why do you fight before the Klitschko fight and take a chance?' You know every fight is a danger, but I can't stay home and sit with nothing to do. I need to practice. Every day I learn a little bit, and a little bit more, this is my way. It will only help me prepare."
"The Solis fight was only two minutes, but two times he hit him (Klitschko) very easy. I think, and Roger said too, a short guy with a tall guy is never a good opponent, because they are difficult. It is difficult to hit (the short guy) because he is down. Valuev said the same thing after fighting Haye; he said he never fought a guy like David. David was like me, we are quick and uncomfortable to fight."
"People say I cannot beat the Klitschko's because I am too short, that I can't fight heavyweight. But when I started fighting heavyweight I beat Arreola, and next Grant, and every fight is better. I love not being the favorite because I want to make it a surprise and become the heavyweight champion."
"I think the worst opponent is a quick opponent because they can do anything. I am faster than a big heavyweight. My legs are very good. This is not the street, it is the ring, whoever is the smartest will win. I will show my class on April 9th and win."
The Adamek - McBride fight will be the main event on the April 9th card at Newark's Prudential Center. The card is presented by Main Events & Ziggy Promotions. Doors open at 6:45pm, first fight 7:00pm.
Tickets are priced at $253, $103, $78, and $53. Tickets are available online at www.ticketmaster.com, Charge-by-phone: 1-800-745-3000, Ticketmaster Express 866-448-7849 and Ticketmaster ticket centers. Tickets are also available at Prudential Center's Box Office.
Adamek vs. McBride will be distributed in the United States and Canada by Integrated Sports Media for live viewing at 9 PM/ET - 6 PM/PT on both cable and satellite pay-per-view via iN Demand, DIRECTV, DISH Network and Avail-TVN and Canada via Viewer's Choice, Bell TV and Shaw Cable PPV for a suggested retail price of only $29.95

Osumanu Adama will take on Marcus Upshaw in a twelve round bout for the IBO Intercontinental Middleweight title.
Perennial Welterweight contender David Estrada will take on Lanardo Tyner for the IBO Intercontinental Welterweight title.
Joey Hernandez will battle Angel Hernandez for the USBO Jr. Middleweight title.
Adama of Miami, Florida via Accra, Ghana has a record of 18-2 with thirteen knockouts. He won his first thirteen bouts and only has lost to Dyah Davis and Donovan George. He is coming off a twelve round unanimous decision over Angel Hernandez.
Upshaw of Jacksonville, Florida has a record of 13-4-1 with six knockouts.
He has been matched very tough as he has lost to undefeated prospects Phil Williams and Edwin Rodriguez as well as then undefeated contender Tarvis Simms.
Upshaw has pulled many surprises in his career, just ask heralded James McGirt Jr. who Upshaw held to a draw. Upshaw has wins over undefeated Ashandi Gibbs (10-0) and his last bout when he went up to the hometown of Renan St, Juste (21-1-1) and won a split decision.
Estrada of Chicago has been in with just about every major name around the Welterweight division and has been in many fight of the year candidates.
The thirty-two year old has a record of 25-6 with sixteen knockouts. Estrada won his first fifteen bouts which included victories over undefeated fighters such as Matias Rios (7-0); Eric Pinero (1-0) and once beaten Armando Velardez (14-1).
After a loss to undefeated top Prospect Ishe Smith (12-0), Estrada won three in a row against Nurhan Suleyman (14-0) and a big upset over Chris Smith (19-0-1) on SHO BOX.
That win set up a fight against the legendary “Sugar” Shane Mosley as part of a major Pay Per View. Estrada came up a little short but fought well enough to stay at the top of the rankings and compete in an IBF Elimination bout against Kermit Cintron.
Once again, Estrada showed his mettle before being stopped in ten rounds in a what was a back and forth war.
Estrada’s only losses since have come to currant WBC Welterweight champion Andre Berto (19-0); Jesus Soto Karass and undefeated power puncher Luis Abregu (24-0) via split decision in a bout that many who watched the bout thought Estrada should have won.
Estrada has since pulled off a big upset when he stopped undefeated Orlando Lora (26-0-1) and in his last bout he scored a fifth round stoppage over Franklin Gonzalez.
Tyner is in the same boat as Estrada as he has fought many big names and pulling off some big upsets.
Tyner of Houston has a record of 24-4-1 with fifteen knockouts. He won his first nineteen bouts before dropping bouts to former world title challengers Lamont Peterson and Mike Arnaoutis. After losing to future Super Welterweight champion Saul Alvarez, Tyner came back to upset rising prospect Antwone Smith (18-1-1)
Joey Hernandez of Miami has a record of 17-1-1 with ten knockouts.
He won his first fifteen bouts which included a decision win over undefeated Alpachino Allen.
He is coming off a second round stoppage over fifty-five fight veteran Saul Duran
Angel Hernandez of Chicago has a record of 30-9 with seventeen knockouts.
Much like the rest of the card, Hernandez has fought top competition such as former world title challenger Wilfredo Rivera ( L UD); a sixth round knockout over Leonard Townsend (35-1); a decision win over former world title challenger Larry Marks (22-5) a decision loss to former world title challenger JC Candelo (24-4-3) a split decision loss to future IBF Jr. Middleweight champion Kassim Ouma (16-1-1);
He then challenged IBF Jr. Middleweight champion Winky Wright before dropping a unanimous decision as part of the Roy Jones – Antonio Tarver Pay per View undercard.
Hernandez has gone on to defeat McGirt Jr. (19-1-1) and former world title challenger Antwun Echols before dropping his two fights to Peter Manfredo and Adama.

PAULIE MALIGNAGGI BATTLES JOSE MIGUEL COTTO ON APRIL 9 "ACTION HEROES" HBO PAY-PER-VIEW® UNDERCARD
LOS ANGELES, March 23 - Former Junior Welterweight World Champion Paulie "Magic Man" Malignaggi will step back onto the big stage against Puerto Rico's Jose Miguel Cotto in a 10-round welterweight fight on Saturday, April 9, at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nev., on the "Action Heroes" HBO Pay-Per-View event.
"We promised to deliver the best fights for the April 9 pay-per-view and we are continuing to do that with the addition of the always-flashy and exciting Paulie Malignaggi against the experienced Jose Miguel Cotto," said Oscar de la Hoya, president of Golden Boy Promotions. "It is going to be a clash of a boxer versus a puncher, plus Paulie is looking to avenge his loss to Jose Miguel's older brother, Miguel Cotto, in a fight you won't want to miss."
Flashy in and out of the ring and blessed with the heart of a lion, Brooklyn's Paulie Malignaggi (28-4, 6 KO's) has regrouped and now, fighting at welterweight, the "Magic Man" is in top-notch form as he pursues a world title in a second weight class. Coming off of a sixth round technical knockout win over Michael Lozada in December, the 30-year-old Malignaggi can't wait to show off more of his new tricks on April 9 against the brother of the man - Miguel Cotto - who handed him his first professional loss.
"I'm very excited to be on this great card that is generating a lot of buzz," said Malignaggi. "I think fighting Cotto is a good test and an important next step at this point in my career as I climb back to the top of the sport. His brother Miguel is the best fighter I have fought in my career, so I know when fighting a 'Cotto' I have to be prepared. I'm excited for the challenge and the chance to keep proving 'naysayers' wrong."
A 14-year veteran who can do it all in the ring, Caguas' Jose Miguel Cotto (32-2-1, 24 KO's) represents Puerto Rico with heart and pride every time he steps through the ropes. A longtime lightweight contender who has continued to find success as he has moved up in weight, the 33-year old Cotto has won four of his last five fights. His most recent fight was a fourth round technical knockout win over Christopher Henry in November. He returns to Las Vegas for the first time in nearly a year and expects a win against Malignaggi.
"This is going to be a great fight," said Cotto. "I've been in the gym training my hardest and I feel ready. Having a big win over Malignaggi will move me closer to a title opportunity. I will not let this one go by."
"Action Heroes," featuring Morales vs. Maidana in a 12-round junior welterweight bout and Guerrero vs. Katsidis in a 12-round lightweight battle is presented by Golden Boy Promotions in association with Erik Morales' Box Latino and Universum Box Promotions and sponsored by Cerveza Tecate, AT&T, DeWalt Tools and Tres Generaciones Tequila. Mobile Holmes On The Road To Belfast For Graham Earl’s April 2nd Show
TKO Box Office
Graham Earl Promotions
Presents
FISTS OF FURY
London - Wednesday, 23rd March 2011
Stevenage’s Terry Holmes is set to travel to Northern Ireland for the third fight of his fledgling professional career, where he will take part in former World champ, turned promoter, Graham Earl’s maiden Belfast event ‘Fists of Fury’ at the King’s Hall on Saturday 2nd April 2011.
19 year old Holmes is already earning a reputation as one of the toughest youngsters on the scene after his scintillating performances over Johnny Greaves, back in October, and more recently against Sutton’s Danny ‘Cassius’ Connor, on Graham Earl’s excellent ‘Capital Punishment’ event at York Hall in January.
Back in January Holmes started hard and fast, forcing Connor to use his jab to keep his raging bull attacks at bay. Holmes seemed content to throw bomb after bomb whenever he got in range.
Round two was more of the same, until around midway when one of Holmes’ bombs hit the target - hard. Feeling more confident Holmes went even more on the attack. Connor continued to use his jab to keep the terrier like Holmes at bay, however Holmes just wouldn’t back down.
Things settled down a bit in the third round and some good toe-to-toe action ensued. Holmes slowed things down a bit and instead of launching wild attacks started picking his punches. Connor was boxing well but the tide had turned firmly in favour of Holmes with his more controlled approach.
Round four was more of the same again and at one point looked like Holmes may have the stoppage he predicted after landing a big right before pouncing on Connor with a flurry of big shots. Connor weaved and ducked but with his back to the rope didn’t seem to have an escape route so let rip with a few of his own. This was enough for Holmes to take to the back foot. Connor pushed forward and let rip with a salvo of his own. The crowd were on their feet as the action flowed back and forth until the final bell rang and Holmes was declared victor by a 40-36 points margin.
Following a sparring session at Johnny Eames’ famous Ultrachem TKO Boxing in Canning Town, London, a confident Holmes spoke briefly about his upcoming Belfast fight, “Yeah, I’m back out again on 2nd April in Belfast.
I’m looking to improve and build on my last win. I think I went a little bit wild last time out, I wanted to beat him up because he kept saying he was going to knock me out and things like that.
I don’t think he hit me that much, it went well and now I’m looking forward to fighting in Belfast.
Graham hasn’t old me who I’m fighting yet, but I don’t care anyway I’m going for the win. I’ll go out there and do what you do and get another good win under the belt.
We’ve been training quite hard, sparring all day yesterday and the day before. Been going well they’re all good boxers, it’s been good sparring for me really. I just need to lose a little bit of weight now and then I’m ready.
It’ll be a good fight and a good win for me.”

Kevin McBride Media Workout
Kevin McBride held a media workout today in preparation for his April 9th fight against Tomasz Adamek. This is what he had to say:
"I've been doing what I have to do to get fit for 12 rds. I have a good team behind me. I want to show the world that I'm a contender. When I hit him on the chin he'll think the whole of Ireland was doing it. The best thing about it is the Polish People will be there to witness it!"
"I'm expecting a good fight. It's going to be exciting; the Polish and the Irish is a great combination. I'd love to see a few Irish there too, but a hostile crowd won't affect me at all. It was a hostile crowd when I fought Mike Tyson. With Tyson nobody gave me a chance, but I proved different. That's what I plan to do on the 9th of April."
"This is my last chance to show the world that I am a contender and I'll follow my dream to be the first Irish born Heavyweight Champion. I have a good team with manager Jerry Quinn & trainers Goody Petronella who will be in my corner with Nirmal Lorick."
"Adamek was a great champion in light heavyweight and cruiserweight, but this is the heavyweight division. I know that one punch can do the job."
"There's only two ways that I could go out of the ring: the winner; or on a stretcher. There is only one man who could win that night and that is Kevin McBride."
The Adamek - McBride fight will be the main event on the April 9th card at Newark's Prudential Center. The card is presented by Main Events & Ziggy Promotions. Doors open at 6:45pm, first fight 7:00pm.

New Trainer Mike ‘Red’ Skownowski On Target Working With Matt “Sharp Shooter” Remillard
MANCHESTER, Conn. (March 22, 2011) – New Jersey-based trainer Mike “Red” Skownowski reports that training unbeaten NABF and NABO featherweight champion Matt “Sharp Shooter” Remillard for his March 26 showdown against unbeaten IBF No. 1 contender “Mikey” Garcia, despite being together a little more than month, seems like they’ve been working together for a year.
Remillard-Garcia is the 12-round co-feature on Top Rank’s “Featherweight Fury,” airing live on HBO After Dark from Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
The 24-year-old Remillard (23-0, 14 KOs) has been at training camp with his new trainer, “Mike Red,” Skownowski, in Passaic, New Jersey. The WBA #3, WBO #4 and WBC #5 rated Remillard puts his NABF and NABO title belts on the line against USBA titlist Garcia (24-0, 20 KOs).
The newly Top Ranked-signed boxer is in the fight of his young life, one that offers title implications for the Remillard-Garcia winner against IBF Featherweight Champion Yuriorkis Gamboa, or his challenger Jorge Solis if he registers an upset in the 12-round main event “Featherweight Fury.”
“Everybody in the gym immediately liked Matt,” Skownowski said. “We have a lot of young kids who have gravitated towards him. Right now, four of them are sitting around between workouts talking boxing with Matt. It seems like we’ve been working together for a year, not 4-5 weeks. In 3 ½ weeks he had already sparred 84 rounds, working double sessions, and he’s a real gym rat. He came to me in shape but not in good boxing shape. Every day he was sparring 10 rounds. I don’t want to leave it in the gym, so the other day I gave him light stuff. He got upset because he’s use to going 100 miles an hour.”
Skownowski also works with former world champion Kendall Holt, as well as prospects such as Glen Tapia, Jorge Diaz, Victor Valenzuela, Jeremy Byrant, Jose Perrault, and Wanzell Ellison. In the past he worked with the late Arturo Gatti and Tomas Adamek.
“Matt has a very tough fight against Garcia but I think he’s going to shock a lot of people,” ‘Mike Red’ noted. “I didn’t think Matt was a big a puncher as he is. His strength and power are much better. I thought he was more of a finesse fighter but he can bang, too. We’ve worked hard on his footwork and his jab has improved.”
Remillard has developed into a dangerous body puncher, stopping several opponents with an attack similar to that of another New Englander, “Irish” Micky Ward, who has often talked to Matt about his left hook to the liver. “Yeah,” Skownowski added, “when I tell Matt I want a Micky Ward, he knows what I mean – tap to the head and then drill the left hook to the body.”
Tickets, priced at $200, $100 and $50 plus applicable fees, are available to purchase at the Boardwalk Hall Box Office or by calling Ticketmaster at (800).736.1420 or online at www.ticketmaster.com.
